Intel 4000 file storage: A really slow experience

Storage 4000Had the misfortune of buying a Intel SS4000 file storage three days ago. It got installed, upgraded and stabilized two days ago, the disks were left for syncronizing until today. They got tested this afternoon – the request for returning was after the test.

The good things: The housing was small, quiet and neat. A fancy little box. It was pritty to look at and quiet.

The bad things: I was unable to get above 4.5 MB/S transmission speed, even on a gigabit network using crossed CAT-6 cable without switches. It was also impossible to save a 6.5 GiB file, one of the companies I am getting into these days are making videos and thereby using large files. It was also given 48 hours for replication, according to Intel, 40 hours should be sufficent.

The disk indicators were amber, they did not turn green after 48 hours replication. It could be that I was too hasty on the replication but 48 hours to replicate…

New tests will be done sunday, the thing wil get all the time it needs for replication. After all, would be really good to have a dedicated file storaga without any ways to tamper with it. It will be my first gadget without tampering posibilities.

Stupid things others do with their computers

  1. Make a single computer be the one you are relying your entire business on
  2. Partition that computer with both eyes on the “official” recommendations on the partition sizes, not thinking about what use the computer is ment for
  3. Avoid to make any backups
  4. DO NOT make the main passwords be noted somewhere, not even on a paper in the companys safe!

That was the situation in a company I looked at yesterday, it is frightening…

Now, I am in the process of making the management be aware of the fact that backup is a good thing (TM), and the time to take the backup is NOW!

The only data that you can trust on is the second set of backup data – because then you got a first set and the main data…
