DVD backup on Ubuntu 9.04

My wife have bought some DVDs not released in any zone readble for our DVD-player:

  • Me and my shadows, life with Judy Garland
  • Edit Piaf, her story, her songs
  • The Beales of Grey gardens
  • Fatso

So what do you do when you’r DVD player are programmed to lock after 5 zone switches?

Here are the recipi for cracking your DVDs so they’ll be readable in your DVD-player:

  1. Add a the Wine repository to /etc/apt/sources.list:deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt jaunty main #WineHQ – Ubuntu 9.04 “Jaunty Jackalope”
  2. Install wine and winesetuptk
  3. Get the program DVD Shrink (Ok, it’s  a Windows program, but who said this should be about Linux only? i just want to get the job done..)
  4. Get K3B and all dependencies (apt is a friend)
  5. Run the dvd shrink program from wine, make sure that you load the DVD from dvd shrink, make the program create a copy of your DVD. (dvd shrink is small and easy, if you fiddle around a bit you’ll get the hang of it)
  6. Run k3b, start a new video DVD project
  7. From the target folder of your dvd-files (the files made by dvd shrink), copy the files in dvd shrinks target directory VIDEO_TS to the VIDEO_TS – directory in K3B
  8. Burn the DVD with K3B – and your finished
